Looking for genuinely joyful elderly activities in Norwich? At Redlands House Care Home in Hellesdon, May 2026 brought a boat trip on the Norfolk Broads, a family quiz night, a charity coffee morning for Mental Health Awareness Week, flag painting for National World Cultural Day, a visit from Mad Science, gardening in the sunshine and rather a lot of ice cream. This round-up shares what our residents got up to last month, and why it matters if you are choosing care for someone you love.

When you are looking into care homes for a parent or relative, the question behind every question is usually the same. Will their days be full? Will anyone take the time to really know them, and plan things they will actually enjoy? We hope this month’s round-up of elderly activities in Norwich from Redlands House goes some way to answering that.

Out and About: Making the Most of May in Norfolk

The undoubted highlight of the month was our boat trip on the Norfolk Broads. There is something about being out on the water, with the reeds and the birdlife drifting past, that lifts everyone. One resident summed the day up better than we ever could: “This was the best thing I have ever done.” Days out like this are exactly why we plan our elderly activities in Norwich around what residents genuinely want to do, not what is easiest to organise.

Closer to home, some of our gentlemen attended the local chapel, a quieter moment in a busy month that means a great deal to those who go. And Brenda enjoyed a trip out to browse the shops, coming home happy with flowers and cards. Small, personal outings like Brenda’s matter just as much to us as the big days out, because they are chosen by the person, for the person.

Wellbeing at the Heart of Elderly Activities in Norwich

May is always an important month for wellbeing, and this year was no exception. For Mental Health Awareness Week, Redlands held a charity coffee morning on 14 May, with all proceeds going to the charity. Mary, one of our lovely activity coordinators, even brought a little something for each member of staff, a kind touch that set the tone for the whole week. If you would like to know more about the campaign, the Mental Health Foundation’s Mental Health Awareness Week page explains this year’s theme of taking action for good mental health.

Pampering is one of the best-loved elderly activities in Norwich care homes, and Redlands is no exception. Our male champion John ran pampering sessions in the barbers for the gentlemen, and later in the month a qualified nail technician visited to do the ladies’ nails. As one of our team put it on the day, “don’t they look posh”.

Some of the most meaningful moments happened one to one. David, who was a bank manager, spent a lovely session going through his old briefcase, and every item brought a memory with it. Reminiscence work like this is quiet, personal and powerful, especially for residents living with dementia.

And behind the scenes, our team spent the bank holiday on 25 May completing fire marshal training, because keeping your loved one safe underpins everything else we do.

Everyday Joy, from Quiz Night to Karaoke

Our family quiz night was great fun, with relatives joining residents and staff for the evening. Some of those questions were very difficult indeed, and watch this space, because there are already plans afoot for the next one. The rest of the month was packed too:

  • Painting flags from around the world for National World Cultural Day on 21 May, with plenty of chat about the places residents have travelled
  • A fascinating visit from Mad Science on 22 May, so popular that we will definitely be booking them again
  • Planting up hanging baskets and planters for everyone to enjoy over the summer
  • Decorating stones for the garden, with ice creams and lollies to keep everyone cool
  • Garden games in the morning sunshine
  • Karaoke on a scorching day, with lollies on hand to help everyone stay hydrated

We rounded off the month with a big happy birthday to our wonderful George. And looking ahead, we are already planning a Father’s Day breakfast on 21 June, a full English shared with loved ones.

Why Elderly Activities in Norwich Matter So Much

A full calendar of elderly activities in Norwich is not about keeping busy for the sake of it. Meaningful activity supports memory, mood, appetite, sleep and friendship, and it gives every day a shape and a purpose. That belief has guided Redlands House since 2003, and it runs through our residential care in Norwich, our specialist dementia care and our respite stays. Whether it is a boat on the Broads or a briefcase full of memories, the aim is the same: days that feel like living, not waiting.
